The açaí (ah-sigh-EE) berry is the fruit of the açaí palm tree, which is native to the island of Trinidad and certain northern regions of South America. Açaí berries were used by native Brazilians thousands of years ago for medicinal purposes. Demand for the açaí berry has gone up in recent years because purported health experts have claimed that it provides numerous health benefits. Such claims resulted in a brief açaí craze, in which many companies and manufacturers used the berry as an ingredient in smoothies, juices, and other foodstuffs. Açaí berries contain genuinely beneficial nutrients, including various amino acids, calcium, vitamin A, polyunsaturated fats, antioxidants, and dietary fiber.
Around 2004, açaí berry supplements became a fairly popular form of alternative medicine. As a contract manufacturer of acai berry liquid supplements we must make sure that we provide our customers with full and honest disclosure. But controversy erupted over the claims made by marketers and manufacturers of açaí, who claimed that certain celebrities—including Rachel Ray, Oprah Winfrey, and Dr. Mehmet Oz—had endorsed açaí berry supplements as being efficacious and potent when, in fact, they had done no such thing. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prohibits dietary supplement manufacturers from making promissory statements about their products. Accordingly, numerous sellers of açaí berry supplements were sued for deceptive advertising; in the span of the years 2009 to 2010, Oprah Winfrey sued around fifty Internet sellers, Lisa Madigan (Illinois Attorney General) sued several local suppliers, and the Federal Trade Commission itself sued a manufacturer for false claims. Allegedly, an açaí berry supplement can be used for weight loss, cancer, aging, osteoarthritis, detoxification, and general well-being. But none of these uses have been supported by definitive clinical trials on humans. Thus, promissory statements about açaí berry supplements are still considered unethical and deceptive.
At Matsun Nutrition, we abide by the rules of the FDA and we make no claims attesting to the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of açaí berries. As a contract manufacturer of açaí berry liquid supplements, we believe that consumers ought to conduct their own research and determine for themselves whether or not they feel justified in purchasing a particular product. But if you are interested in marketing an açaí berry supplement, we are here to help. We have been leaders in the liquid nutraceutical industry for over 20 years, and we would love to be your contract manufacturer and use our experience and resources to concoct the right liquid supplement for you.
