Energy shots and energy drinks are not uncommon sights in modern supermarkets. Many stores even feature whole sections dedicated to such products. One of the primary ingredients is a liquid vitamin B-complex. Little energy shots are often displayed at check-out lines along with miscellaneous candies, gums, breath mints, and batteries. Energy shot manufacturers often include legitimately beneficial ingredients in their products, but some of the other ingredients they include are not so beneficial and may even be harmful.

Mega-doses of B vitamins are typically included in energy drinks. B vitamins are incredibly useful in the body; they help convert the food we eat to energy that our bodies can use, but each of the eight B vitamins also plays more specific roles. Vitamin B3, for example, raises “good” cholesterol and is sometimes used to treat acne. Vitamin B6 helps regulate mood and sleep patterns. Vitamin B helps create red blood cells and hemoglobin. Most people tend to get enough of the B vitamins from their diet, but high doses of these vitamins may result in higher energy (though this notion has not been scientifically validated). Another common ingredient in energy drinks is taurine. Taurine is actually an amino acid that is naturally produced by our bodies. It does help regulate energy levels, as well as heartbeat and muscle contractions, but its inclusion in energy drinks is puzzling; our bodies produce adequate taurine, and supplementation seems unnecessary. Other amino acids are also included in energy drinks, but they, like taurine, probably don’t do much when taken in excess.
Unfortunately, many energy drinks contain potentially harmful ingredients. Energy drinks tend to contain exorbitant quantities of added sugar. Too much sugar has been linked to obesity, diabetes, and all sorts of other unpleasant diseases. To make matters worse, the nutrition/supplement facts on energy drinks indicate the amount of sugar in one serving, but a single can may have as many as three servings. Thus, downing a can of a given energy drink often equates to ingesting obscene amounts of sugar. One such ingredient is caffeine. Caffeine tweaks your nervous system to make you more alert. But it also raises blood pressure, dehydrates your body, and, at higher levels, causes sleeplessness, headaches, nausea, and other unpleasant side effects. Energy drinks often also contain various other stimulants, some of which, like guarana, contain significantly more caffeine than coffee beans.
Commercial energy drinks ought to be drunk with caution. They often contain potentially beneficial nutrients, but they also tend to contain ingredients that, in high quantities, are detrimental to your health, like sugar and caffeine.
