Zinc is a transition metal on the periodic table of elements. It is also an essential trace mineral for humans; this means that we need to ingest small amounts of zinc in our diet to maintain our health. Zinc deficiency is uncommon in developed countries like the U.S. (Americans tend to eat ample quantities of red meat, which generally contains zinc), but its symptoms, according to the National Institutes of Health, can include “growth retardation, loss of appetite…impaired immune function[,] hair loss, diarrhea, delayed sexual maturation, impotence, hypogonadism in males, and eye and skin lesions.” In third-world and undeveloped countries, zinc deficiency is more prevalent. Ingesting the recommended amount of zinc per day (about 11 mg/day for men and 8 mg/day for women) is certainly important, and taking a liquid zinc supplement may offer additional health benefits.
Studies show that zinc supports the immune system; thus, supplemental zinc is often taken to treat the symptoms of the common cold and other infections, including malaria. Steer clear of intranasal zinc preparations, though; there have been reports of anosmia (loss of smell) associated with the use of such products. Zinc gluconate is considered to be the most dependable, effective supplemental form of zinc. Supplemental zinc also allays the symptoms of zinc deficiency, predictably enough; children with severe diarrhea or developmental issues caused by malnourishment will likely benefit from a zinc supplement. Sometimes a zinc supplement is used to treat seemingly independent conditions, including asthma, diabetes, ADHD, rheumatoid arthritis, and high blood pressure. Topical zinc is used to treat acne, herpes, and to facilitate wound healing. Research on zinc’s capacity to treat all these conditions has not been conclusive, but much of it is promising and future research will hopefully demystify zinc’s potential.
