Valerian (Valeriana officiinalis) is an herb native to Europe and portions of Asia. The dried root of this plant is used to make various medicines, teas, and even perfume. Some have suggested valerian was even used by the Pied Piper to lure the rats out of Hamelin in the famous legend. Valerian extract is sometimes used as flavoring in foods, beverages and as a valerian root liquid supplement. Valerian root has been used for centuries for various medicinal purposes; even records of the ancient Greeks and Romans contain descriptions of the plant. Valerian has a calming effect, and research has shown that valerian root has sedative and tranquilizing constituents comparable to conventional benzodiazepines. These properties make it potentially efficacious when taken as a valerian supplement.

A valerian root liquid supplement is most commonly taken to fend off insomnia and other sleep disorders. The valerian is typically combined with other ingredients that are thought to induce drowsiness, like hops or lemon balm. Those with insomnia who want to wean themselves off mainstream sleeping pills sometimes begin using such valerian concoctions. That a sedative like valerian should be used to prevent insomnia seems perfectly reasonable. Accordingly, valerian is sometimes used to treat or prevent anxiety, panic disorders, headaches, hysteria, and even upset stomach. It is even used for more grave conditions, including ADHD, depression, and epilepsy. Some women use valerian to help with menopause symptoms.

Valerian doesn’t seem to have any notable adverse effects, but it may not be the best idea to take a valerian supplement along with medications that have sedative effects, which medications include benzodiazepines, depressants and supplements with St. John’s wort or melatonin. As always, it would probably be wise to consult with your doctor if you are considering taking a valerian supplement regularly, and you should never take a supplement in lieu of seeing your doctor.
